Andrew Blackwood-Murray, a seasoned aerobatic pilot at the age of 59, boasts an impressive 16,500 hours of flight experience. His journey in aviation began with a remarkable 7-year tenure in the SA Airforce, where he operated Harvards, Bosbok, and Impala jets. Transitioning into a Commercial Pilot role, he dedicated 25 years of his career to South African Airways.

During his time at SAA, Andrew piloted a diverse range of aircraft, including the Boeing 737 200, 300, and 800 series, the Boeing 747-400 and 767, and the Airbus 340. Presently, he serves as a line training and check Captain at Africa Charter Airline, stationed at the bustling hub of Or Tambo International. In this role, he commands the Boeing 737 300, 400, and 500 series.
Adding to his aviation repertoire, Andrew is the proud owner of the Nashua Extra 300LP, a unique aircraft, the sole of its kind in South Africa. Furthermore, he takes to the skies with the renowned Flying Lions Aerobatic team, where he pilots the North American Harvard.
Andrew’s performance at the West Coast Airshow is nothing short of thrilling. It showcases high-energy aerobatics, featuring an array of maneuvers that subject both positive and negative G forces. The Extra is equipped with a formidable 300hp Lycoming 6-cylinder engine, capable of sustaining up to plus and minus 10G. It boasts an impressive roll rate of 400 degrees per second and can reach a top speed of 400 km/hr.

Gareth is an accomplished airline pilot and a dedicated Grade 2 flight instructor with over a decade of experience in the aviation industry. Currently serving as a Senior First Officer on the Boeing 777, Gareth brings an unparalleled passion for flying, combined with a commitment to training the next generation of pilots. His role as a flight instructor allows him to share his extensive knowledge and passion for aviation, inspiring future aviators to pursue excellence in the skies.

The Bosbok emerged as a stalwart companion during the South African military operations in Angola between 1975 and 1989. Clad in its distinctive olive-drab/dark earth camouflage, this aircraft became an indomitable force in the theater of combat. Its adaptability was unrivalled, with four underwing hardpoints serving as versatile platforms for an array of ordnance, including machine gun pods, light bombs, and smoke-rocket pods.
Master of Target-Marking:
In the perilous role of target-marking, the Bosbok showcased unparalleled prowess. Employing innovative techniques, this aircraft transformed the skies into a canvas of precision. The method was both daring and calculated: flying at tree-top height, ascending to around 92 meters (300 feet) nearly over the target, aligning its nose with unwavering focus, and releasing rockets. A swift turn and dive followed, whisking the Bosbok back to tree-top level, deftly evading ground-fire.

AIRCRAFT: ANTONOV AN-2 & THE PIPER J3C-65 CUB
Captain Alewyn Burger is a distinguished South African aviator with an extensive and diverse flying career. With over 11,600 flight hours logged across more than 70 different aircraft types, he exemplifies versatility and dedication in aviation.
In 2024, Captain Burger achieved the title of National Intermediate Aerobatic Champion, underscoring his exceptional piloting skills and commitment to aerobatic excellence. His prowess extends to rally flying; in 2023, he represented South Africa as a Protea Rally Pilot in France, where he and his teammate earned a bronze medal, highlighting their teamwork and precision.
Beyond competitive flying, Captain Burger serves as a Grade 2 Flight Instructor, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with aspiring pilots. His professional career includes commanding the Boeing 737, where he is recognized for his leadership and expertise.

THE HISTORY OF THE ANTONOV AN-2
The Antonov An-2, affectionately known as the “Colt” by NATO and the “Annushka” in Russia, is one of the most iconic and rugged aircraft ever built. First flown in 1947, this single-engine biplane was designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Soviet Union. Its primary role was agriculture and utility transport, but its versatility led to a wide range of applications, including paratrooper drops, firefighting, and scientific exploration.
A Legendary Workhorse
The An-2 is famous for its ability to operate in harsh conditions with minimal infrastructure. It has short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities, allowing it to take off and land on grass, snow, and even dirt strips—making it ideal for remote areas. The aircraft is powered by a Shvetsov ASh-62 radial engine, producing 1,000 horsepower, giving it impressive low-speed handling.
Longest Production Run in Aviation History
With production spanning from 1947 to the early 2000s, the An-2 holds the record for one of the longest continuously produced aircraft in history. Over 18,000 were built, with some still in operation today. Even though its design is over 75 years old, it remains a favourite among pilots for its rugged reliability and ease of maintenance.
Aviation’s “Flying Tractor”
Nicknamed the “Flying Tractor,” the An-2 has been a lifeline for rural communities, helping with crop-dusting, medical evacuations, and cargo transport in places where modern jets simply cannot reach. Yakovlev Yak-52
The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a Soviet primary trainer aircraft that first took to the skies in 1976. Designed by the Yakovlev Design Bureau, it was produced in Romania by Aerostar from 1977 to 1998 under the designation Iak-52. The Yak-52 was developed as an aerobatic trainer for the Soviet DOSAAF training organization, which prepared civilian sport pilots and military aviators.
The aircraft is powered by a 360-horsepower Vedeneyev M-14P nine-cylinder radial engine, driving a two-bladed, variable-pitch propeller. Its robust all-metal construction and retractable tricycle landing gear make it both durable and versatile. Notably, the Yak-52 employs a pneumatic system for operating the landing gear, flaps, and brakes, a feature that contributes to its ruggedness and reliability.
In the cockpit, pilots sit in tandem under a framed canopy, with the aircraft’s design allowing for a range of aerobatic maneuvers. Mike George – Number 3 Position
Mike George’s love for aviation runs in the family. His father, also a passionate aviator, bought the Ryan Navion in 1988, making it a cherished part of their lives. Mike officially took to the skies in 2006, continuing the legacy of flying the very same aircraft he grew up around. His aviation career started with model aircraft at 13, earning an instructor rating from the South African Model Aircraft Association. From working in film productions like Flight of the Phoenix to becoming Chief Flight Instructor at Krugersdorp Flying School, Mike’s experience spans across, flying King Air 200s, charter operations, and aircraft refurbishments.
With over 1,800 total flight hours and 160 on the Navion, Mike co-founded Aircraft Inc., specializing in aircraft restoration and maintenance. His deep connection to the Navion makes every maneuver a showcase of history, skill, and passion.
Reyno Coetzer – Number 2 Position
From childhood airshows to flying real aircraft, Reyno Coetzer turned his passion into reality. He earned his PPL in 2016 and quickly transitioned to flying the Ryan Navion in 2017, gaining 450 total hours and 350 on type.
As the founder of Aircraft Inc., Reyno has combined his love for flying with hands-on aircraft maintenance, ensuring these classic machines stay in the air for future generations. His formation flight training and aerobatic expertise make him a key part of the Navion Display Team, delivering breathtaking aerial displays that showcase precision, heritage, and power.
AIRCRAFT: North American Navion
The Ryan (formerly North American) Navion is a warbird-inspired classic with roots tracing back to the P-51 Mustang. Originally designed by North American Aviation in the 1940s, the Navion was built as a military trainer and personal transport aircraft.
Equipped with a Continental IO-520 EXP engine (320 HP), retractable landing gear, and a sleek, streamlined design, the Navion offers both power and elegance in the sky. Of the 2,700 Navions produced, only nine remain in South Africa, and five are still flying—two of which will be featured in this dynamic two-ship aerobatic display at the 2025 West Coast Airshow!

Air Tractor AT-802
The Air Tractor AT-802 continues, season after season, to prove its value as the best aerial firefighting asset, without parallel. Built specifically for battling wildfires, this aircraft combines speed, power, and precision. Equipped with a powerful Pratt & Whitney engine, it can fly at up to 322 km/h, allowing it to quickly reach fire zones. Its compact design makes it ideal for operating in rugged terrains, from remote airstrips to narrow mountain corridors.
With its advanced fire retardant system, the AT-802 can drop water or fire retardant exactly where it’s needed, slowing down to make accurate, low-altitude drops to stop fires in their tracks. Thanks to its fuel efficiency and low operating costs, the AT-802 is not only great for putting out fires but also works well for forest restoration after fires, helping replant and protect landscapes.
Bell UH-1H “Huey”
The Bell UH-1H “Huey” is known for its quick deployment and versatility, making it a top choice for firefighting and various aerial missions. Kishugu uses the Huey for rapid helicopter attack teams on wildland fires, aerial fire suppression, and more specialized tasks like anti-poaching operations, game relocation, film production, and disaster relief.
Upgraded to meet civilian standards, the Huey is modified to handle heavy, repetitive lifting safely and reliably. Equipped with a 1,000-liter Bambi Bucket, it can transport water quickly to fire lines, making it highly effective when water sources are nearby. Its fast turnaround time means it can make a significant impact on fires with multiple water drops.
Beyond firefighting, the UH-1H Huey excels in a range of other roles, from cargo transport to wildlife conservation and emergency response, demonstrating its versatility and essential role in aerial operations.
Cessna 182/206/210
The Cessna 182, 206, and 210 models serve as essential aerial Command and Control aircraft during firefighting operations. Kishugu uses these aircraft to oversee wildfires, coordinating safety and operations from the sky. Equipped with VHF Aircraft Radios and Technisonic Mid Band radios, these Cessnas ensure clear communication with other aerial resources, Incident Commanders, and firefighting teams on the ground.
In addition to firefighting support, these Cessna models are also used in Kishugu’s ATO for pilot training, highlighting their versatility and reliability in both operational and educational roles.




James O'Connell
IMPALA MK1
James O’Connell is a decorated, retired officer of the South African Air Force with over 36 years of flight experience, including 25 years as an experimental test pilot. He has logged over 4,000 hours on rotary-wing aircraft and 1,600 hours on fixed-wing aircraft, serving in key roles such as lead Test Pilot for the A109 LUH and Oryx helicopters. With unique experience in arctic operations, he has tested helicopters in extreme conditions in Antarctica. James is currently TFASA’s Chief Flight Instructor and is a recognised member of the South African Test Pilot Association and the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

James O’Connell is an accomplished experimental Test Pilot who has made significant contributions to both rotary and fixed-wing flight testing. Known for his expertise and dedication, James has logged more than 4,000 hours on rotary-wing aircraft and 1,600 hours on fixed-wing aircraft, making him one of South Africa’s most skilled pilots.
James’s distinguished career includes 29 years as an officer in the South African Air Force, where he served as an operational helicopter pilot and senior Test Pilot. He held the lead Test Pilot role for the A109 LUH helicopter, a pivotal project in replacing the revered ALO III.
